Proposed electricity levy won’t benefit Eskom

Eskom’s chief executive Brian Dames on Wednesday told Eyewitness News that the proposed new levy on electricity would not go directly to the power utility.
It was reported that Energy Minister Dipuo Peters and other officials told a parliamentary committee on Tuesday that the new levy was being considered to fund to the rehabilitation of the country’s power infrastructure.
In 2010 the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) ruled that Eskom could receive three annual increases of around 25 percent over the next three years.
Dames said this new levy did not involve Eskom.
“From our perspective as Eskom, our tariffs are set for the next three years and that includes all the refurbishment for the Eskom distribution business,” he added.
